When is the best time to visit Zacatecas?

The peak season for visiting Mexico tends to be between December and April, as visiting during these months enables you to avoid the rainy season (which runs roughly from late May until the end of October). Travel to Zacatecas during this peak period is likely to be more expensive, especially if you want to book your flights during the school holidays. However, there are usually discount packages, and last minute money off offers that the sharp-eyed traveller can take advantage of. Fly to Mexico during the cooler, or rainier months of May or November to avoid the brunt of the rainy season whilst snapping up the reduced cost flights associated with this off-peak period. Why visit Zacatecas?

Art lovers should make sure to visit the Rafael Coronel Museum, which is located in a stunning old monastery, and which houses a fascinating collection of indigenous artwork. The now inoperative mine known as the Mina El Eden is home to some unforgettable and atmospheric tours that will really open up the city’s mining past to you. The Zacatecas Cathedral is an absolutely magnificent building and a must see landmark for any visitor of the city. One of the most popular tourist sites in Zacatecas is the gigantic fortress known as La Quemada. Over a century and a half old, this edifice is steeped in history, and there are plenty of local tour guides on hand to teach you all about it.

Getting around Zacatecas

Zacatecas is connected by motorway to most of the major cities nearby, so hiring a car is a great idea if you want to get around the city with independence and perhaps explore further afield too. Specialised tour buses are available to take you to important sites of interest, such as La Quemada. If you want to travel in a truly memorable way, though, why not take the Teleforico? This is a cable car strung between two mountain peaks and, in just 10 minutes, will take you over the whole Old Town.

Getting from the Airport to Zacatecas

Zacatecas is served by General Leobardo C. Ruiz International Airport (ZCL) is located a short drive from the town centre. Several of the larger hotels in Zacatecas operate shuttle services to and from the airport, so make sure to check with your hotel to see if you can take advantage of this. These shuttles are handy as they will be timed to coincide with the arrival times of your flight. Hire cars and taxis are also popular options for reaching Zacatecas after your flight arrives. For extra peace of mind, it is a good idea to agree on your taxi fare with your driver before you depart for the town centre.
